Asunción, Agencia IP.- Through a statement, the Paraguayan yerba mate union expresses its rejection of «the disqualifications that the Argentine Republic makes against yerba mate produced in Paraguay.»
The yerba union made this statement after the governor of Misiones, Argentina, Hugo Passalacqua, stated that Paraguayan production represented a risk for the neighboring country.
The Paraguayan yerba mate business association points out that «as an effect of the regulatory liberalization decreed by the new Executive Branch of Argentina at the end of 2023, the industrialists of said country took advantage of the competitive advantage, given by the exchange difference.»
They explain that «the quality of the Paraguayan product is equal to or better than that obtained in said territory. Due to this circumstance, a significant increase in demand was evident, reflected in imports made by Argentina.»
The yerba mate union also states that it understands the intentions to protect yerba mate, an emblematic asset for the region, as long as they are legitimate.
«But from the moment they are based on discredit and disqualifications without scientific evidence of a difference in quality and safety between Paraguayan, Brazilian, and Argentine yerba, we feel betrayed as neighbors and brothers,» says the statement.
Passalacqua sent separate complaints to his country’s executive about the consequences of the herbal deregulation. The combination with the opening of imports that affected 13,500 workers in Argentina justified the governor of Misiones.
