To commemorate 90 years of Japanese immigration to Paraguay, a piece of ñandutí lace was gifted to Japan

Asunción, Agencia IP.- As part of the commemorations of the 90th anniversary of Japanese immigration to Paraguay, a traditional piece of ñandutí lace was given to Japan as a symbol of friendship and the historical ties between the two countries.

The gift, a framed piece of Paraguayan crochet lace, was sent by the Paraguayan Ambassador to Japan, Mario Toyotoshi, and delivered to Japanese Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi through her staff, according to Japanese blogger Matsushima Midori.

The piece represents the traditional art of ñandutí, one of the most emblematic expressions of Paraguayan culture, and was specially designed to commemorate this significant anniversary of the Japanese presence in the country.

The design incorporates the red, blue, and white colors of the Paraguayan flag, along with the number 90 and a paper crane, a symbol of peace and hope, elements that reflect the spirit of the commemoration.

The work was created by Elena Iwatani, a second-generation Paraguayan artist based in Japan, who is dedicated to promoting ñandutí through exhibitions, demonstrations, and educational activities, and who also presides over the Ñandutí Association of Japan.

The 90th-anniversary celebrations include various activities in both Paraguay and Japan. In this context, a special exhibition is planned at the Museum of Emigration Abroad in Yokohama to disseminate the history of migration and cultural exchange between the two nations.

Paraguay and Japan maintain a long-standing relationship based on cooperation and solidarity. During the 2011 Tōhoku earthquake and tsunami, Paraguay provided humanitarian assistance by sending soybeans to the affected areas, demonstrating the bond of friendship between the two nations.

The Nikkei community has played a fundamental role in Paraguay’s economic, social, and cultural development, consolidating a bilateral relationship that continues to grow toward stronger cooperation and mutual understanding.
