Asunción, Agencia IP.- The President of the Republic, Santiago Peña, began his official agenda in the United States with a meeting with Senator Marco Rubio, their fourth meeting, as part of the Executive’s objective of strengthening ties with the Legislative Branch of the North American country.
The President detailed that an update on the relations between Paraguay and the United States was carried out following Senator Rubio’s historic visit to our country last February.
«We thanked him for the resolution he presented yesterday, which celebrates the historical relationship with Paraguay and the great rapprochement that the United States has. Relations are excellent in different areas,» Peña stated at the end of the meeting.
«More and more senators and members of the House of Representatives are talking about Paraguay, hearing about Paraguay, and have an opinion about the country. That is very positive,» Peña emphasized. He recalled that his objective was to increase the approach between Paraguay and the U.S. Congress.
He indicated, «We maintain an excellent relationship with the Government but not with the American Congress» and highlighted that «the voice of Paraguay is being heard with increasing strength» in this regard.
Strategic ally of the U.S.
Senator Rubio, for his part, pointed out that Paraguay is a fundamental factor that the United States must support and strengthen, given its shared interests and values, such as the defense of democracy, unconditional support for China (Taiwan) and Israel, and rejection of the Russian invasion in Ukraine.
Peña highlighted that this is the fourth time he has met with the senator from the state of Florida. The first two were when he was a presidential candidate and president-elect, and the following were already in his capacity as Head of State.
The President assured that he periodically receives high-ranking officials from the U.S. government in Paraguay to discuss various topics, among which security stands out. He said that, due to its geographical and political position, Paraguay should be seen by the North American country as a strategic ally. In that sense, support should be more decisive.
The President was accompanied by Foreign Minister Rubén Ramírez, Minister of Industry and Commerce (MIC) Javier Giménez, and MITIC Minister Gustavo Villate.
