The Paraguayan government maintains cooperation between SENAD and DEA

Asunción, Agencia IP.- The Paraguayan National Defense Council (CODENA) has announced that the cooperation between Paraguay’s National Anti-Drug Secretariat (SENAD) and the United States Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA) remains active. This follows the DEA’s response regarding a partnership agreement signed in 2022.

CODENA’s Head, Cibar Benítez, delivered the news at a press conference. In response to an initial notification from SENAD proposing to terminate the agreement and redirect it to the National Police, the DEA clarified that a 2022 memorandum of understanding is still in effect.

Benítez noted that this memorandum was not listed in SENAD’s archives.

«We are operating under the same principle: this is a reorganization of terms to better align Paraguay’s structure for receiving this cooperation,» Benítez stated.

As a result, the cooperation between the two agencies will continue, and a dialogue table has been proposed to expand its scope. One of the first measures will be to request the inclusion of other institutions, such as the Secretariat for the Prevention of Money Laundering (SEPRELAD), in efforts related to information exchange and operations against drug trafficking and organized crime.

Benítez confirmed that the original letter from SENAD’s Head, Jalil Rachid, requesting the termination of the agreement had been rescinded.

The CODENA head reiterated the government’s commitment to strengthening the National Police and coordinating security efforts through CODENA.
