Peña wants to position Paraguay as a leader in global renewable energy

Asunción, Agencia IP.- Paraguay’s objective is to advance «in a sustainable model» that allows it to maintain a leadership position in the renewable energy sector in the region and globally.

This was declared by the President of the Republic, Santiago Peña, who argued that Paraguay «is not only green, it is also blue,» thanks to the potential of its rivers in energy production, which allows them to have predominantly renewable gross supply, around of 76% of the total, divided into 40% hydropower and 36% biomass.

In a meeting with the Director of the International Monetary Fund (IMF), Kristalina Georgieva, and the Inter-American Development Bank (IDB) President, Ilan Goldfajn, President Santiago Peña highlighted the importance of multilateral collaborations.

«Paraguay has always understood that impositions from outside are not positive; they can help us from outside, but there has to be a sense of belonging among the people of the country,» he commented, adding that the most significant benefit of regional development banks «is not in access to financing, but to knowledge.»

In this sense, he exemplified this situation with the support of the IDB just a few months ago in a meeting with Brazilian Government members to discuss security issues since he recognized that they suffer «an increase in lack of security,» a claim that was already in his elections lines this year.

On her part, Kristalina Georgieva asked countries to collaborate among themselves to address the climate emergency since her entity believes that «it is not possible to do it alone, without having the knowledge that organizations on the ground have.»

Furthermore, the IMF Director called for creativity, taking into account «the enormous challenge before us» and, to the extent possible, being «prudent» when adjusting the budgets of climate programs.

«We must not be too ambitious so as not to deteriorate society’s confidence if progress is not achieved,» he told those present.

Regarding the regions in which the IMF focuses, Georgieva highlighted Africa «for its difficulties, but also for its potential in renewable energies,» as well as in Central American countries such as Honduras, Panama, and El Salvador.

Finally, Ilan Goldfajn positioned himself in favor of supporting local communities and eliminating inequalities, for which, from his entity, they seek to strengthen relationships with allied markets to promote stable environments, according to a note published by the EFE agency.
