Asunción, Agencia IP.- President Santiago Peña met with French President Emmanuel Macron during the International Summit on Sports and Sustainable Development this Thursday in Paris. «We talked about the relations between our countries and the challenge that all nations face in building a world with more development opportunities for all,» the Paraguayan president expressed on his social media.
The president also met with other heads of state and business leaders, such as Bill Gates, at the Summit to mark the inauguration of the 2024 Olympic and Paralympic Games. «This event aims to promote sport as an accelerator of sustainable development,» he noted.
The Summit, organized jointly by the International Olympic Committee (IOC) and the French Presidency, welcomed 500 participants, including heads of state and government, leaders of international organizations, athletes, and representatives of the sports movement, such as French and global federations, the Olympic Movement, associations, business leaders, and development financiers.
This Summit’s goal is to unite sports and sustainable development. It focuses on five areas: education and employment, health and nutrition, equality and inclusion, sustainability and legacy, and financing and impact measurement.
Other heads of state and government were welcomed, highlighting a shared interest in «sports and development» projects in partner countries, hoping that the legacy of Paris 2024 will allow for more significant progress.
Starting today, France will host the Olympic and Paralympic Games, the world’s largest sporting event, involving public institutions, NGOs, and members of civil society.
The Summit noted that the Games offer a unique opportunity to unite the participating nations around the United Nations’ Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).
It was reported that the Summit would allow countries and sports stakeholders to make clear their determination to ensure that sport contributes to the SDGs, in line with the goals of Paris 2024 and as part of a broader commitment to future generations.
This year is dedicated to youth and is part of a series of international events linked to the Paris Pact for the Planet and People, launched in June 2023, and the Future Summit, which will take place in September.
