Asunción, Agencia IP.- The President of the Republic, Santiago Peña, led the screening of the documentary «Paraguay: The Hidden Gem,» during which he reflected on the country’s identity and potential. The President thanked attendees for sharing the moment, describing Paraguay as «a magical place.»

Peña shared a personal experience that left a lasting impact on his life, recalling an event at Columbia University 22 years ago. During a lecture by Professor Jeffrey Sachs, Paraguay was absent from the analysis of Latin America.

«I realized I was about to speak about a country I was passionate about and thought I knew well. But in reality, it was a country I deeply misunderstood,» he said, which inspired him to delve into his nation’s history.

The President highlighted Paraguay’s historical journey, from the arrival of the Spanish to the fratricidal war of the 19th century. He emphasized the pivotal role of women in rebuilding the nation after the war, stating, «If we still call ourselves Paraguayans today, it’s largely because of the women.»

Peña also stressed the importance of learning from the past to build a brighter future. He pointed out the need to shift the negative perception of Paraguay, stating, «This change is a cultural shift; it’s a change in mindset.»

In another part of his speech, he asserted that Paraguayans are determined to open their hearts to the world and showcase the country’s opportunities. «This is the cultural transformation Paraguay is experiencing,» he said.

He concluded with an optimistic vision for the country’s future, emphasizing its potential to become a model of sustainable development. «Paraguay has been running the race of development from behind, but this is also an opportunity,» he declared, urging everyone to work together to share this «gem» with the world.
