Paraguay seeks to become the first country to ratify the Mercosur-EU agreement

Asunción, Agencia IP.- The President of the Republic, Santiago Peña, announced that next week he will submit the agreement signed between Mercosur and the European Union to the Permanent Commission of the National Congress, so that, once approved, Paraguay becomes the first country to ratify the document signed last Saturday in Asunción.

«I had planned to present it this week, on Thursday morning, to Congress; we are moving it to next week, and hopefully it can also be considered so that Paraguay becomes the first country to ratify it,» President Peña said on Wednesday, hours before departing for Davos, where he will sign the founding charter of the «Peace Board.»

In this way, Paraguay seeks to capitalize on the benefits of the largest association achieved by Mercosur, since if the European Union implements the agreement, even on a provisional basis, the Mercosur countries, as their respective congresses approve it, will be able to begin applying its provisions.

«Paraguay will clearly be a major winner in the implementation of this agreement,» President Peña stated.

On the other hand, the president referred to the European Parliament’s decision, which today sent the agreement to the Court of Justice. Peña said that this had been anticipated as a possible scenario and that, despite this, the European Union has the legal tools to implement the agreement even before its promulgation by the European Parliament.

«There are cases where agreements sent to the Court have been implemented for 10 years, so I really do not see this as an obstacle,» he said.
