Asunción, Agencia IP.- The Government of Paraguay, through the Ministry of Public Works and Communications (MOPC), signed a contract with the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA) for the execution of a project to improve the drinking water system in Villa Hayes. This bilateral agreement will guarantee a safer, more efficient, and more sustainable water supply.
«The signing of this contract represents the realization of a long-awaited project and an opportunity to settle a historical debt with Villa Hayes,» stated Claudia Centurión, Minister of the MOPC.
This project, with an investment of approximately USD 17 million, will ensure access to one of the population’s most basic needs, improving the quality of life for families and benefiting more than 50,000 people.
The JICA Resident Representative in Paraguay, Chika Takahatake, emphasized that this initiative includes commissioning fundamental components, such as water intake, a modern water treatment plant, a pipeline, and advanced monitoring systems, to enable efficient and sustainable operation.
«This will have a positive impact and contribute to the sustainable development of Villa Hayes,» stated Takahatake, adding that it will be fundamental for the development of the capital of the Presidente Hayes Department.
The project includes the construction of a Potable Water Treatment Plant (PTAP) with the capacity to produce 12,000 cubic meters per day, a raw water pipeline approximately 1.1 kilometers long, and the incorporation of technology to optimize the monitoring and operation of the system, which will allow it to meet the city’s growing demand.
These improvements will increase water production and treatment capacity, enhance service continuity, and enable more efficient responses to the city’s growing demand.
The project is financed through a donation from the Government of Japan, channeled through JICA, for an amount of 1.936 billion Japanese yen, in accordance with the provisions of Law No. 6994/2022.
