Asunción, Agencia IP.- Itaipu Binacional received the «IEEE Milestone» recognition as a Global Engineering Milestone, an award given to initiatives or technologies with a significant impact on society.
The technical director of Itaipu Binacional, Hugo Zárate, expressed his great satisfaction at receiving recognition from an institute that brings together distinguished specialists from around the world. He noted that this achievement results from the effort of all the employees who have worked and are still working at the Entity.
«Today, we are always seeking renewal. Itaipu is in a process that started two years ago, and it has a work plan of approximately 14 years to update all peripheral equipment. We are always looking to be at the forefront of technology. For us, it is gratifying to receive such recognition,» he stated.
For his part, Alberto Sánchez, president of IEEE Region 9, highlighted Itaipu Binacional’s role in protecting the environment and its contribution to mitigating climate change, which has a positive impact on people’s well-being.
«We celebrate a historic milestone for the region and Latin America. There are only six such milestones in Latin America, and this is the sixth. Itaipu has set many records, but I believe the most remarkable aspect of this project is the benefit it first brings to the two nations, Paraguay and Brazil, and then the benefit it has had for humanity,» he emphasized.
The president of IEEE Region 9 added that significant climate change is happening globally, and without a doubt, projects like this benefit and help humanity.
International recognition
The IEEE Milestone program, an initiative of the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE), honors significant technical achievements in all areas associated with the institute. The goal is to manage and catalog information about the history of electricity, electronics, and computational technologies and their contributions to humanity.
In 2018, the Paraguay Section of IEEE proposed granting recognition to Itaipu Binacional. In February 2023, IEEE decided to award this distinction, naming the Itaipu Hydroelectric Plant (1975-1984) a milestone.
IEEE established the Milestone Program in 1983 to recognize the achievements of great endeavors that shaped the professions and technologies represented by this association.
Each milestone recognizes a significant technical achievement that occurred at least 25 years ago in a technology field represented by IEEE and has at least a regional impact. Since 2016, more than 170 milestones have been approved and dedicated worldwide.
