Historic compliance with commitments of the Paraguayan State with indigenous communities of the Chaco

Asunción, Agencia IP.- In a historic milestone for human rights and social justice, representatives from various institutions of the Paraguayan State are visiting the Chaco to comply with the judgments of the Inter-American Court of Human Rights (IACHR) in favor of four indigenous communities of the Paraguayan Chaco.

Heading this inter-institutional delegation of 27 entities and organizations is the General Director of Strategic Communication of the Ministry of Information and Communication Technologies (MITIC), César Palacios, appointed as a focal point by this ministry.

Paraguay TV will provide live coverage of the working group’s activities on May 9 and 10, 2024. These activities will include discussions on crucial topics for these communities, such as land restitution, supervision of essential assistance (food, health, education, among others), inspection of works on access roads, and oversight of the implementation of Community Development Funds by the indigenous peoples. This comprehensive coverage aims to keep the public and stakeholders fully informed about the visit’s objectives and outcomes.

The Vice Presidency of the Republic, in close collaboration with MITIC, is working diligently to ensure the Paraguayan State’s international commitments are met. This includes ongoing processes favoring indigenous communities before the Inter-American Human Rights System, instilling hope for a brighter future.

The Presidency of the Council for the Implementation of the Convention on the Rights of the Child (CICSI) by Vice President Pedro Aliana has specifically requested the accompaniment of MITIC in this inter-institutional visit to the territorial seat of the indigenous communities Yakyte Xa, Sawhoyamaxa, Xákmok Kásek, and Kelyenmagategma.

The activities include meetings, dialogues, and tours of these communities’ territorial settlements, including inspection of institutional efforts to promote their development and well-being.

All these actions will be carried out in the Presidente Hayes department, approximately at kilometer 350 of the Concepción – Pozo Colorado route, where the state authorities will work tirelessly to guarantee the full respect of the rights and dignity of these indigenous communities.

The Paraguayan State’s unwavering commitment to the restitution of ancestral lands and the provision of necessary assistance for the subsistence of these communities is unwavering. The Ministry of Public Health and Social Welfare (MSP and BS), the Ministry of Social Development (MDS), the National Emergency Secretariat (SEN), the Paraguayan Indigenous Institute (INDI), and the National Environmental Sanitation Service (SENASA) are actively involved in implementing concrete actions, including the construction of houses in three communities and the continuous supervision of other ongoing efforts.
