Asunción, Agencia IP.- Bilateral relations between Germany and Paraguay are currently thriving, with prospects for growth in trade, investment, and tourism, according to the German Deputy Ambassador to Paraguay, Jörg Herrera, during an exclusive interview on the program Tribuna, broadcast by Paraguay TV.
The diplomat expressed his satisfaction with living in Paraguay, a country he described as an attractive destination for its quality of life and the warmth of its people. «We have very good relations with Paraguay, so everything is ready for us to work very well here,» he stated.
Herrera noted that the ties between the two countries have deep historical roots, marked by various waves of German migration to Paraguay over the past 200 years. In that context, he mentioned the presence of Mennonite communities, especially in the Chaco region, where strong cultural and educational ties are maintained, including the teaching of German.
In the economic sphere, he noted that while trade relations are positive, there is still room for expansion. He indicated that German investments in Paraguay are currently limited, but could increase with the eventual consolidation of the agreement between the European Union and Mercosur, which aims to create one of the world’s largest free trade zones. «Doors will open on both sides to make trade larger and more intensive,» he stated.
The Vice Ambassador also questioned the use of tariffs in international trade, arguing that they raise consumer prices and hinder economic development. In contrast, he highlighted the European Union’s free trade model as an example of beneficial integration.
Regarding tourism, Herrera emphasized Paraguay’s potential, especially in the ecotourism segment, which is increasingly in demand among European travelers. He stated that, with improved infrastructure and air connectivity, the country could position itself as an attractive destination for German tourists seeking authentic, sustainable experiences.
He also praised Paraguay’s capacity to host international events and highlighted its strategic location in the heart of South America, making it a regional hub. «Paraguay has a very good strategic location,» he affirmed.

Regarding bilateral cooperation, he explained that traditional German support is in a transitional phase due to Paraguay’s economic growth. However, he noted that projects remain active through institutions such as the German Development Cooperation (GIZ) and the German state-owned development bank KfW, as well as through initiatives directly promoted by the embassy, such as micro-projects.
These projects, which receive funding of up to $20,000, are being implemented in various regions of the country, including indigenous communities in the Chaco region, where initiatives such as drinking water systems and support for rural and agricultural educational institutions have been developed. «For us, it may be a small project, but for the people, it makes a huge difference,» he emphasized.
Finally, Herrera highlighted that the diplomatic mission’s objective is to promote awareness of Paraguay in Germany, encouraging companies and investors to explore the opportunities the country offers, particularly in the productive and export sectors.
The Vice Ambassador’s statements reflect strong bilateral relations, with opportunities for growth across various areas and a shared interest in deepening cooperation between the two nations.
