Asunción, Agencia IP.- In a revealing conversation with Tribuna, broadcast on Paraguay TV, British Ambassador to Paraguay Ramin Navai discussed the current state and future of bilateral relations between the two nations. He particularly emphasized sustainability and the green economy as fundamental pillars of collaboration.
With over $1 billion in British investments in key sectors such as renewable energy and the green economy, the relationship between the UK and Paraguay continues to strengthen. This progress is partly due to President Santiago Peña’s long-term vision of positioning Paraguay as a regional leader in sustainability.
The UK: A key partner in Paraguay’s green development
Navai highlighted that one of his priorities is fostering collaboration in areas that contribute to sustainable growth and combat climate change. President Peña, he noted, has been instrumental in promoting Paraguay as a «green country,» a vision that aligns with British policies for transitioning to a low-carbon economy. «President Santiago Peña speaks extensively about the green potential of Paraguay, which has enormous potential for sustainable growth,» Navai remarked.
The Ambassador also pointed out the significant impact of British investments in Paraguay. «We have supported several British companies here, and trade exchanges have grown. We are on track to achieve nearly $1 billion in investments from the UK to Paraguay next year,» he stated. According to Navai, the development of green projects and the transition to a circular economy are crucial for the country’s well-being and successful integration into the future global economy.
Exploring Paraguay’s natural wonders
During his mission, Navai had the chance to visit some of Paraguay’s most iconic regions, including the Pantanal, a unique wetland teeming with biodiversity. «I recently visited the Pantanal, and it is incredible to witness two things: the stunning nature of Paraguay and the impact of climate change,» he noted.
He also praised the Paraguayan Chaco, a vast region with immense natural resources and potential for eco-tourism and sustainable development. «My adventure in the Chaco was incredible. I visited Nueva Asunción near the Bolivian border and explored the Médanos Park Reserve. Stargazing in the heart of the Chaco was an extraordinary experience,» Navai added.
A lasting affection for Paraguay
Navai expressed his enduring affection for Paraguay throughout the interview, describing the country as deeply ingrained in his life.
Having spent nearly four years as the UK’s representative in Paraguay, he reflected on the end of his mission. «It is impossible to put into words; Paraguay is now a part of my life. I see a future here. Although I will not return as an Ambassador, I will keep returning to Paraguay for the rest of my life. I have made many friends here,» he said.

Although his departure is near, Navai emphasized that his connection to Paraguay will endure. «It is been an unforgettable experience, probably the best four years of my life, professionally speaking, and filled with many memories. As I see it, this is not the end of my mission but the beginning of another chapter,» he stated.
Navai also discussed the opportunities created by the UK’s departure from the European Union (Brexit) to strengthen bilateral relations with countries like Paraguay. «Brexit has given us room to focus more on bilateral initiatives, which has been the case with Paraguay. While we are still pursuing an agreement with Mercosur, there is been greater attention paid to Paraguay,» he explained.
Despite the challenges of Brexit, the UK remains committed to the region and Paraguay in particular. «We are in the process of signing new free trade agreements. These processes often take decades, but we are in the early stages of a new era for the UK,» Navai concluded.
Ramin Navai’s mission as British Ambassador leaves a significant mark on UK-Paraguay relations, emphasizing sustainability and economic growth. He remains confident in Paraguay’s bright future in these areas and is committed to returning to a country he now considers a second home.
