Asunción, Agencia IP.- Paraguay’s Minister of Foreign Affairs, Rubén Ramírez Lezcano, and the Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of China (Taiwan), Chen Ming-chi, discussed the progress of ongoing cooperation projects and prospects for future joint initiatives aimed at further strengthening the strategic partnership between Paraguay and Taiwan.
The meeting took place during an official audience held last Tuesday at the headquarters of Paraguay’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs. On that occasion, the officials reviewed the main aspects of the bilateral agenda. Also in attendance were Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs Víctor Verdún and Taiwan’s Ambassador to Paraguay, Iván Y. J. Lee.
Deputy Ministers’ meeting
Deputy Minister Víctor Verdún also met with his Taiwanese counterpart. Both reaffirmed the excellent state of bilateral relations and their governments’ commitment to strengthening a strategic partnership based on shared democratic values, technological cooperation, and sustainable development.
The two officials reviewed the progress made following President Santiago Peña’s State Visit to Taiwan, during which significant achievements were made in trade, legal cooperation, technology, and development assistance. Among the most notable initiatives are cybersecurity and artificial intelligence projects.
In the economic sphere, the authorities highlighted the sustained growth of bilateral trade and Taiwan’s consolidation as one of Paraguay’s leading partners in Asia, as well as a strategic market for Paraguayan exports.
They also assessed the progress of the main cooperation projects currently underway, including the construction of the Asunción General Hospital, the development of the Paraguay–Taiwan Polytechnic University campus, and the implementation of the Health Information System (HIS). These initiatives aim to strengthen national capacities in priority areas for development.
During the meetings, the officials also addressed issues of common interest within the multilateral arena. In this context, the Taiwanese delegation expressed its appreciation for Paraguay’s continued support for Taiwan’s participation in international organizations and congratulated the country on its election as one of the Vice Presidents of the United Nations General Assembly during its 81st session (2026-2027).
Finally, the authorities highlighted that 2027 will mark the 70th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic relations between Paraguay and Taiwan. To commemorate this milestone, they agreed to promote a commemorative agenda that reflects the strong historical relationship between the two countries, characterized by mutual trust, cooperation, and friendship.
