Asunción, Agencia IP.- The recent official visit of the Executive Branch to Taiwan concluded with significant government-level agreements and a renewed impetus for relations with the private sector. The business delegation returned with agreements for a Paraguay-Taiwan Chamber of Commerce and promising business opportunities.
The delegation comprised approximately 50 companies and representatives from the country’s main production, industry, and commercial associations. «Never before has the private sector accompanied the Government in such a prominent and widespread way in Taiwan,» highlighted Marco Riquelme, Minister of Industry and Commerce (MIC), at the press conference where the agreements reached were presented.
The most significant agreement was Taiwan’s authorization for Paraguayan chicken meat exports. The sector expects to acquire a significant share of the USD 350 million that the island currently imports. Furthermore, there are opportunities to industrialize corn in Paraguay as an animal protein source, the minister explained.
Blanca Ceuppens, president of Pechugón, indicated that the first negotiations were held in person with Taiwanese importers and that the first shipments are expected in the coming weeks. After closing with 7,000 tons exported in 2025, they anticipate reaching 10,000 tons exported this year, she stated.
Carbon credits and solar panels
One sector with a formal sales agreement during the visit was carbon credits. The company Atenil reported an agreement to sell carbon credits to ADATA Technology Co.
«Taiwan has a tax on carbon emissions, and companies now have the option of purchasing the credits offered by Paraguay,» the minister emphasized. This represents a potential market of more than 5 million tons of credits, equivalent to approximately USD 100,000 per year.
Another agreement was reached between Heliotec and Taiwanese companies to install a solar panel assembly plant in Paraguay.
Electric buses
The Minister of Industry and Commerce (MIC) also stated that Master Transportation Bus Manufacturing Ltd. has committed to opening an operating plant in the Taiwan-Paraguay Industrial Park in Minga Guazú.
Taiwan-Paraguay Chamber of Commerce
The trade associations accompanying President Peña’s official visit also signed an agreement to establish a Taiwan-Paraguay Chamber of Commerce and a memorandum of understanding with the China Association for International Economic Cooperation (CIECA), a Taiwanese public-private organization focused on industrial and commercial promotion.
The head of the Paraguayan Industrial Union (UIP), Enrique Duarte, highlighted the boost to trade relations during this visit. «The relationship has always been intense and effective at the government level, and this is the first time we have seen real interest from Taiwan in the private sector,» he emphasized.
At the government level, both countries signed an agreement to establish a binational company to build an artificial intelligence (AI) data center in three phases. President Santiago Peña compared the initiative to the Itaipu project, another binational project, which positioned Paraguay at the forefront of hydroelectric power generation, and hopes the Data Center will do the same in the global race to develop data centers for artificial intelligence computing.
