With art, music, and sports, Paraguay commemorates its shared history in Japan

Asunción, Agencia IP.- Paraguay has begun a series of commemorative activities in Japan marking the 215th anniversary of its National Independence and the 90th anniversary of Japanese migration to the country. The program includes cultural, artistic, and sporting events in various cities across the Asian archipelago. The celebrations are supported by the Embassy of the Republic of Paraguay in Japan and bring together Paraguayan Nikkei migrants, artists, and cultural figures in a tribute to the shared history between the two nations.

The program began on May 3 and 4 in Odaiba, a renowned entertainment and technology district in Tokyo, with a concert featuring 55 Paraguayan harps, led by harpist Enrique Carrera, who resides in Japan. The performance combined music and cultural identity and was attended by Prince Akishino, lending the event special institutional significance.

As part of these activities, Elena Iwatani, a master of ñandutí lace and author of publications on this traditional technique, was also highlighted. Her presentation included dance performances during the concert, integrating music, crafts, and tradition as a symbol of the cultural exchange between Paraguay and Japan.

After the initial days, the Paraguayan delegation extended the celebrations to Nagoya and, later, to Osaka, with activities aimed at broadening the commemoration’s territorial reach and promoting Paraguayan culture across different regions of the Asian country.

Sports are also part of the agenda with the «National Independence Cup» soccer tournament held in Gunma Prefecture, specifically in the city of Isezaki. In this context, former Cerro Porteño player Nozomi Hiroyama, current head coach of the Japanese Under-18 national team, donated signed Japanese national team jerseys for the tournament as a gesture of integration and sporting cooperation.

The joint celebrations for Paraguay’s Independence and the anniversary of Japanese immigration are part of a historical relationship based on cultural exchange, mutual respect, and cooperation, which serves to consolidate a bridge between the two nations and project Paraguayan identity internationally.
