Specialists from Acosta Ñu and the United States performed complex surgeries on children with colorectal diseases

Asunción, Agencia IP.- Specialists from the Acosta Ñu Children’s General Hospital and Cincinnati Children’s Hospital Medical Center conducted a medical mission focused on treating complex colorectal diseases in pediatric patients, benefiting children from across the country.

During the event, more than 40 children were clinically evaluated at the Paraguayan medical center. Following consultations held on Sunday, March 8, the medical team selected 15 of the most complex cases, who underwent surgical procedures between Monday, March 9, and Friday, March 13.

The procedures focused primarily on pathologies such as Hirschsprung’s disease and anorectal malformations, conditions that compromise intestinal function and can cause serious difficulties with bowel movements, recurrent infections, and a significant impact on patients’ quality of life.

The surgical sessions began early in the morning and extended into the night, reflecting the intensity of collaboration among the hospital’s multidisciplinary teams and international specialists.

The head of the hospital’s Department of Surgery, Alberto Rovira, explained that these types of procedures require comprehensive coordination among various healthcare professionals. «These surgeries involve coordinated work between pediatricians, anesthesiologists, specialized nurses, surgical technicians, and surgeons, both before and after surgery,» he noted.

The specialist also emphasized that the success of subsequent treatment depends largely on follow-up and post-operative care. In this regard, he indicated that since last year, the hospital has been conducting joint training programs with the Cincinnati medical team to strengthen training for Paraguayan professionals in pediatric colorectal surgery and specialized nursing care.

This is the second medical mission conducted in less than a year by the same international team. Over six days of collaborative work, more than a dozen families underwent surgeries performed by internationally recognized specialists, while the hospital’s professionals incorporated new surgical techniques and continued their training in care strategies that enable patients to achieve better bowel control and a better quality of life.

International course for healthcare professionals

In parallel with the surgical procedures, the specialists participated in the III International Course on Coloproctology in Pediatric Patients, where they gave lectures and training sessions for healthcare personnel.

Dr. Rovira emphasized that this type of training, which is usually very expensive internationally, was provided free of charge to professionals in Paraguay, representing a significant opportunity to strengthen care for patients with complex conditions.

The medical mission, which included surgeons, anesthesiologists, and nurses specializing in colorectal diseases, was funded by the international organization Mending Kids, based in California, USA.

All procedures were performed free of charge for the families, and the hospital’s medical team noted that these types of surgeries are now part of the routine operating room schedule. They also highlighted that collaboration with international specialists allows them to continue refining techniques and treatments that directly impact the well-being of children and their families.
