Silvio Pettirossi Airport receives security certification to operate direct flights to the U.S.

Asunción, Agencia IP.- The United States Transportation Security Administration (TSA) has certified the Silvio Pettirossi International Airport, allowing it to resume operations with airlines offering direct flights to destinations in the United States.

The first route expected to be reinstated is the Asunción-Miami direct connection, reported the director of the National Directorate of Civil Aeronautics (Dinac), Nelson Mendoza, to ABC Color.

The U.S. Embassy in Paraguay reported earlier this week on the TSA evaluation and congratulated Dinac for «meeting international security standards at Silvio Pettirossi International Airport (…), a significant advancement in airport security and in the institutional strengthening processes of Paraguay’s civil aviation system.»

It is now expected that airlines interested in operating in Paraguay will receive Airbus A321 aircraft to reestablish the direct connection between Asunción and Miami, Mendoza explained.

The TSA evaluation included several recommendations that Dinac will implement immediately, he added. The certification for airline operations also authorizes private (charter) flights from the United States.

The last time a flight operated between Asunción and Miami was in 2021, run by Eastern Airlines, coinciding with the easing of post-COVID-19 pandemic measures, and it proved to have high passenger demand.
