Asunción, Agencia IP.- During the bilateral meeting between the President of the Republic, Santiago Peña, and the outgoing President of Taiwan, Tsai Ing-wen, they reviewed the years of relationship and the great benefits both nations have received, as well as the ongoing support that has existed for more than 60 years.
After the meeting last Sunday, the Paraguayan President expressed that it was a pleasure for him, representing the Republic of Paraguay, to visit the sister nation of the Republic of China (Taiwan). He highlighted the beginning of a new government period with the President-elect Lai Ching-te, which «is always an opportunity to renew the commitment to freedom and democracy.»
«Paraguay, as a steadfast friend for 66 years, comes to honor the freedom and democracy of the Taiwanese people and to accompany the beginning of this new presidential term. The people of Paraguay and I come to pay tribute to you and say thank you. Without a doubt, your eight years of presidency leave a huge legacy in the bilateral relationship between the Republic of China (Taiwan) and the Republic of Paraguay,» Peña said to the outgoing President.
He highlighted the trade balance between both countries and the countless projects carried out during her presidency, saying they «are merely testimony to the affection and love you have shown to the Republic of Paraguay and its people.»
The Head of State mentioned Taiwan’s education sector: «Paraguay places all its hope in the most important asset a nation has: its people, its youth. During your presidency, President Tsai, Paraguay has seen hundreds of young people come to study thanks to the enormous generosity of the people of the Republic of China (Taiwan) through various programs such as those of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the creation of the Paraguay-Taiwan Polytechnic University, and other training programs for Paraguayan youth.»
Peña recalled the meeting held with scholarship recipients. «This afternoon, I met with many of them who are now seeing their lives change, thanks to the education and cultural exchange they are experiencing with this great nation,» he emphasized.
Eternal gratitude and permanent commitment of Paraguay to Taiwan
Peña reiterated his gratitude to the outgoing President, making Paraguay’s permanent commitment to Taiwan clear and eternal gratitude towards Tsai Ing-wen, who leaves the Presidency this Monday. «President Tsai, today I come to say thank you. Paraguay has much to thank Taiwan for because we are convinced that diversity and difficulty are fundamental elements for a people that wants to progress and is determined to overcome any challenge ahead,» he affirmed.
He emphasized that Paraguay is following that path of work, dedication, investing in human capital, and a nation’s most valuable asset: its people. «And through that investment, we are convinced that just as Taiwan has done, Paraguay will be able to do so in a short time. President Tsai, tomorrow, you close a brilliant presidency of this great nation and open a new chapter in your life. I want to say on behalf of the entire Paraguayan people that we are immensely grateful to you and know that you have in Paraguay a nation that appreciates, respects, and will welcome you as if you were at home,» he concluded.
