Over 3.000 Paraguayans studied abroad through Becal

Asunción, Agencia IP.- The National Postgraduate Scholarship Program Abroad «Don Carlos Antonio López» (Becal, its acronym in Spanish) has already selected 3.051 Paraguayans nationwide to accomplish their dreams of studying at the best academic centers of the world through 109 calls made since 2015.

63% of the benefited are women, according to the data at the end of September of this year. Currently, 1.554 returnee scholars have received training in different fields. Likewise, there are 765 scholars worldwide who are pursuing their master’s, doctorate, and Ph.D.s, and undergraduate students are studying a semester abroad.

Through the eight years of the Program, 1.545 scholarships were given at a graduate level abroad, 480 scholarships for English, French, German, or Portuguese languages at Paraguay, destined to undergraduate students who wish to pursue a masters abroad; 412 for teacher training abroad, 340 doctorates, 242 for undergraduate international mobility, and 32 for the post-doctorate at the bests foreign academic centers, reported the Ministry of Economy and Finance (MEF).

The science fields that the scholarship recipients studied or are still studying, in the first place, is Education, with 976 scholarships awarded, followed by Social Sciences, which includes Psychology and Cognitive Science, Economics and Business, Sociology, Law, Political Science; Social and Economic Geography; Media and Communications, among others, with 632 scholars; Humanities with 573; Engineering and Technology with 376; Medical Sciences with 189; Exact and Natural Sciences with 183; Agricultural Sciences with 122, respectively.

Besides Spain, the United Kingdom is the leading destination for scholars studying for their master’s and doctorate. After, there are the United States, Mexico, Russia, Australia, France, Brazil, Germany, Chile, and Canada. Italy, Netherlands, Switzerland, New Zealand, and Singapore are other destination countries.

Regarding the origin districts of the scholars, they are nationwide. Caaguazú follows Asunción and Central with 181 scholarships awarded; Itapúa with 168; Alto Paraná with 88; Concepción with 81; Cordillera with 76; Paraguarí with 67; Guairá with 60; San Pedro with 42; Misiones with 39; Ñeembucú with 38; Caazapá with 37; Amambay with 23; Presidente Hayes with 15; Boquerón with 8; Canindeyú with 7; and Alto Paraguay with 3 scholars.

Becal’s objective is to increase the formation of advanced human capital for the country, mainly in science, technology, and education.
