UN: Paraguay reaffirms commitment to promoting equal opportunities for women

Asunción, Agencia IP.- The Minister of Women, Cynthia Figueredo, presented Paraguay’s ongoing efforts to support women in all aspects of their lives at the 69th session of the United Nations Commission on the Status of Women (CSW) in New York.

She participated in Ministerial Roundtable One, which focused on «National mechanisms for gender equality and the empowerment of women and girls: renewing commitment to the Beijing Platform for Action, providing resources, and accelerating its implementation to contribute to achieving the Sustainable Development Goals.»

The head of the Ministry of Women stated that the Paraguayan government has intensified its efforts to implement effective and innovative solutions to build a fairer and more inclusive country. She reaffirmed the country’s commitment to promoting equal opportunities for women, development, and peace.

She explained that her institution leads initiatives to ensure the highest efficiency in policies to advance women’s rights. This is a collective effort that requires unwavering dedication from all individuals and institutions involved in promoting equality, protecting women’s rights, and eradicating violence against women in Paraguay.

Public policy for rural women

The Minister shared examples of best practices to accelerate the inclusion of women in public programs, highlighting the public policy for rural women, which the Ministry of Women coordinates in partnership with rural women leaders from all country departments.

She emphasized that this policy is part of a National Women’s Network developed with the support of the Ministry of Environment and Sustainable Development and the Ministry of Agriculture and Livestock. Its goal is to ensure the empowerment and economic autonomy of rural women.

In this context, she introduced the Kuñanguéra Omimbíva («Women Who Shine») program, which provides training and technical assistance to organized women entrepreneurs in both professional and productive sectors, focusing on districts prioritized by the social protection system.

Figueredo also highlighted the Ministry’s efforts to strengthen Regional Women’s Centers in departmental capitals and initiatives to showcase women’s productive capabilities through a digital platform for women entrepreneurs.

Committee on the prevention of violence against women

She further discussed the work of the Committee on the Prevention of Violence Against Women. This inter-institutional body brings together key public sector actors to ensure comprehensive protection for women against all forms of violence. This includes prevention, care, support, and guidance for victims, always considering women’s human rights.

The Minister also presented Paraguay’s National Care Policy to the UN. This policy aims to ensure the well-being and autonomy of both individuals in need of care and their caregivers, recognizing care as a fundamental right.

Figueredo emphasized that Paraguay focuses on six key thematic areas, including service provision, communication, training and capacity-building, regulatory frameworks, and information and knowledge generation in a world where inequality remains a persistent reality.

The official Paraguayan delegation at the 69th session of the Commission on the Status of Women in New York also includes Vice Minister of Equality and Non-Discrimination Sonia Brucke; Ambassador Marcelo Scappini, Permanent Representative to the UN; Minister José Eduardo Pereira of Paraguay’s Permanent Mission to the UN; Mirta Benítez, Head of Gender at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs; and Félix Giménez and Jazmín Pavón, technical representatives from the Ministry of Women.
