Words of Ambassador José Han at the Taiwan–Paraguay 68 Conference

It is a great honor and a true pleasure for me to organize this commemorative conference on the occasion of the 68th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic relations between the Republic of China (Taiwan) and the Republic of Paraguay. I would like to sincerely thank all of you for joining us today.

Since July 12, 1957, our nations have walked side by side, supporting each other on the international stage and strengthening the bonds of friendship and cooperation day by day.

This relationship has been built on a solid foundation of shared values: democracy, freedom, the rule of law, and respect for human rights.

Throughout these decades, our countries have jointly promoted countless cooperation projects across various areas. I could list them, but today I would like to share with you an anecdote that illustrates the real, human impact of this bilateral relationship.

For many years, one of our key priorities in cooperation has been the construction of social housing for vulnerable sectors. Blanca Hsu, a colleague of mine who oversees these projects, recently visited one of the beneficiary communities to assess the progress of the homes and meet the residents. She was received with great warmth and kindness. Many people came up to her to express their gratitude to Taiwan, because, in their own words, their lives had been completely transformed.

A young girl approached her and said:

«Before, we lived in challenging conditions. My parents were always worried about my siblings and me when they went to work, because our house could collapse at any moment. Now we have a safe home. My parents work from home, and we can study there. I’m getting good grades.»

Moved, Blanca went to her car and returned with a calendar and a brochure. She handed them to the girl and said:

«This calendar is your reward for your effort and good grades. This brochure contains information about scholarships offered by the Taiwanese government. I hope that one day you can study in Taiwan or at the Taiwan–Paraguay Polytechnic University right here in Asunción.»

This story deeply touched me, and today I wanted to share it with all of you to reaffirm a clear message: Taiwan will always stand by Paraguay, working hand in hand to generate well-being and opportunities for all Paraguayans. We are a close friend, someone you can share a conversation and a beer with in confidence, but also a reliable partner, committed to national development and Paraguay’s sustainable economic growth.

To conclude, I would like to express my sincere thanks to the distinguished speakers who will share fascinating and inspiring reflections with us tonight. This gathering, in addition to being a celebration of the friendship between our peoples, will also serve as a space for dialogue, reflection, and the joint development of ideas. We all share the dream of seeing a prosperous Paraguay. And Taiwan — yesterday, today, and always — will be ready to accompany and be part of that dream.

May we celebrate many more anniversaries together, and may many more years of cooperation and friendship be ahead of us!
